Danville is a beautiful city located in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. The southern border of the city touches the North Carolina and Virginia dividing line. Danville is located about 45 miles north of Greensboro, North Carolina and about 70 miles south of Roanoke, Virginia. According to the United States Census Bureau, there were 42,000 people living in Danville in 2015.
Original inhabitants of the territory Danville is located in were Native American Indians. In 1728, Colonel William Byrd and 19 others were sent to determine boundaries between Virginia and North Carolina. It is said when Byrd and his company arrived in the area of present-day Danville, he described the area as “the South Branch of the Roanoak River the first time, which we call’d the Dan.” This discovery led to the eventual establishment of Danville, Virginia.
