Chatham, Virginia is a small town located in Pittsylvania County. The town is located about 20 miles north of Danville, Virginia and about 50 miles west of Roanoke, Virginia. Chatham serves as the county seat of Pittsylvania County despite being one of the smaller cities therein. According to the United States Census Bureau, about 1,400 people were living in Chatham in 2016.
Before Chatham was established by Europeans, the territory the town is located in was occupied by Native American Indians. In 1767, Pittsylvania County was formed. About 10 years later the county was separated from Halifax County. The original seat of government for the county was Callands, Virginia. In 1777, the county seat was moved and placed in the county center which is now modern-day Chatham. Today, Chatham remains the county seat and Pittsylvania is one of the oldest counties in Virginia.
Individuals who visit Chatham will discover a charming and beautiful town. Chatham is known as the “Prettiest Little Town in Southside Virginia.” Individuals who exit onto Business 29 will be lead to Chatham’s Historic Main Street. This area of the town is home to beautiful buildings, locally owned businesses, and Virginia charm. The rest of the town is characterized by Victorian houses, manicured lawns, and decorative landscape. After visiting Chatham, many find it difficult to leave.
Chatham is located in a climate that experiences cool winters and warm summers. Daytime temperature highs during the months of December, January, and February vary from the upper-40s to low-50s on average. At night, temperatures will dip below freezing. Throughout the summer months, daytime temperature highs will climb to the low-100s when heat waves pass through Chatham.
